The Roadhouse 071

24 June 2006 6 Comments

We’re running the rainbow in this edition with a full view of all the hues of the blues. Blues rock, jazzy blues and, of course, the traditional sound of this amazing musical form. If you’re new to The Roadhouse, you might be a bit surprised by the range of styles. But it’s all blues – the finest blues you’ve never heard. You’ll hear great cuts from The Beat Daddys, Tommy Castro, Fat Vinnie and the Wiseguys, Larry McCray, and Clarence Gatemouth Brown. We’ll flash back on a couple of cuts played in previous shows in the Roadhouse Rewound segment and I hope you’ll walk away with an interesting fact or two about many of the artists. It’s the 71st Roadhouse Podcast, a rainbow of styles that all resolve to blue.

    Hello to the roadhouse

When I went to school in Evanston I would
go to this little place called the
The Amazing Grace Club, Evanston, IL
Folk like Bonnie Raitt, Steve Goodman,
Randy Newman Emmylou Harris and John Prine
would play in a room a little larger than your living room.
I remember hearing Angel From Montgomery done
by a few of the people who played there. This was
in 1972 when the earth was young.

It was very cool of you to play it on your show. As
I remember Steve Goodman may have had a hand
in writing Angel From Montgomery. They were very
close at the time. Once again thanks

Tony – Thanks again! I sure hope we get to hit the road and have you come out to a show. You are a lifetime Lester VIP guest!! :)

Angel From Montgomery. So sweet. So soulful. So Susan. I love the way Susan can wrap her voice around any song she tackles and make it her own. When she plays this song live, she often throws in a Sugaree tease as well, and the crowd goes wild. Thanks for playing it.

    Tony,
    Great job as usual!
Thanks for playing Clarence Gatemouth Brown. One of my all time favorite blues virtuoso guitarists. You almost apologise for the jazziness of Gatemouth’s chops but remember he always resisted being called a blues man. This cut really shows why. You should consider exploring some of the threads of the Blues in Jazz. Count Basie is every bit the blues man as Willie Dixon. You might also look into Lonnie Johnson who played with as many “jazz” bands as he did “blues” bands.

    Cheers,
    Hank

    Tony,
Thanks for playing my request, it was great to hear Corey Harris again – I’m definately going to go to his website and buy some of his stuff. I’ll be sure to let them know about the Roadhouse.
    Keep on keepin’ on,
    Campbell

I must thank you for introducting me to the blues. I had an interest in the blues ever since I saw Bonnie Raitt openning for Eric Clapton but didn’t know quite how to get started so thanks for the introduction. I went to see Johnny Winter this weekend in Sherwood Park, Alberta and was absolutly blown away by both him and the opening act David Gogo. If you could get some Gogo stuff on the podcast that would be incredible.

Thanks for introducing me to an amazing genre of music and keep on rocking my iPod.

    Rob Crane.
